That depends on the tool, because they do not all handle your file the same way:

• Nothing is uploaded with PDF Merger, File Organizer (for PDFs and spreadsheets), Sign PDF, PDF to Excel, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, JPG to PDF, PNG to PDF, JPG to PNG, PNG to JPG and WebP to PNG. They run inside your browser, and your file never leaves your device.
• Our own server handles Video Converter, Audio Extractor, Archive Converter, Repair PDF, Redact PDF and Translate Document. Your file is kept only while the page is open, and is deleted within about five minutes of you leaving it.
• A trusted conversion service handles the other document tools, such as PDF to Word, Word to PDF and Compress PDF.

Nobody looks at your files, and we never keep them: every file is deleted after a conversion.

Usually not. Most documents and images are ready in a few seconds. A conversion takes longer when:

• The file is large, because uploading it takes time on a slow connection. The tools that run in your browser upload nothing, so their speed depends only on your device.
• It is a video. The time depends on the video’s length and resolution, and a long one can take several minutes or more. Choosing a smaller resolution makes it considerably faster.
• Our server is busy, in which case your file waits in a short queue before it starts.

Keep the page open until your file is ready. With Video Converter, Audio Extractor, Archive Converter, Repair PDF, Redact PDF and Translate Document, closing the page cancels the conversion.

We take care to keep it that way, without promising more than any website can:

• Every page and every upload uses an encrypted HTTPS connection, so your file is protected on its way to be converted and on its way back.
• You do not need an account for any tool except Translate Document, which is for account holders. If you create one, we keep your email address (and your name, if you sign in with Google), and any password you set is stored only in scrambled form, so it cannot be read back.
• Uploaded files are deleted automatically, as described above, rather than kept in a library.
• On our servers, the software that handles your files runs with restricted permissions, and each address can make only a limited number of requests.

No online service can guarantee complete security. If a document is highly sensitive, use a tool that runs entirely in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

Yes. PDF to Word turns a PDF into a Word document (.docx) you can edit, and PDF to PowerPoint and PDF to Excel give you editable slides and spreadsheets.

A PDF saved from a program such as Word already contains its text, so it converts directly. A scanned PDF is different: each page is a picture of the text, not the text itself, so there are no words to edit until they are recognised. That is what OCR (optical character recognition) does. It reads the letters in the image and turns them back into real text.

PDF to Word runs OCR automatically on pages that need it, so a scan comes back as text you can edit. Clear, straight scans give the best results, and it is worth checking names and numbers afterwards, because OCR can misread a character. PDF to Excel only reads text that is already in the PDF, so it cannot pull a table out of a scanned page.

Every tool is free to use. All of them except Translate Document work without an account; Translate Document is for account holders, and each account can translate up to 100,000 characters a day. There is nothing to install: the tools work in any modern browser on a computer, phone or tablet. We do not add watermarks to your files. We plan to pay for the site by showing ads on it.

It depends on the tool:

• Up to 2 GB: Video Converter, Audio Extractor, Archive Converter and Repair PDF.
• Up to 256 MB: Redact PDF.
• Up to 200 MB: Compress PDF.
• Up to 64 MB: Translate Document, with up to 100,000 characters of text, and up to 100,000 characters a day for each account.
• No set limit for PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Excel to PDF, PowerPoint to PDF, PDF to PowerPoint, Password Protect PDF and Unlock PDF, but the upload has to finish within about 40 seconds, so a very large file needs a fast connection.
• No upload at all for the tools that run in your browser. The only limit is your device’s memory, so a very large file may be slow on a phone.
